[미네소타주립대 학교 만카토]'The Role of the Media in a Democratic Society'(Minnesota State University, Mankato)

The third of five panel discussions in a Minnesota State University, Mankato spring colloquium series on “American Politics & Our Democratic Principles” will be held Tuesday, April 4 and address “The Role of the Media in a Democratic Society.”

The event, free and open to the public, is from 3:30-4:45 p.m. Tuesday on campus in Morris Hall, Room 102.

The event format includes a moderated panel discussion with an introduction, followed by three speakers for five-eight minutes each, questions and open discussion for 20-30 minutes and closing remarks. All views are welcome. Deliberative discussions and light refreshments will follow each event. The series will be live-streamed.

Tuesday’s moderator will be Matt Cecil, dean of Minnesota State Mankato’s College of Arts and Humanities. Panelists will include Joe Spear, editor of the Mankato Free Press, and three Minnesota State Mankato faculty members. They will include Dan Cronn-Mills, professor, Department of Communication Studies; Amy Lauters, associate professor and chair, Department of Mass Media; and Rachael Hanel, assistant professor, Department of Mass Media.

Spear will provide an insider’s view of the media. Lauters and Hanel will bring the perspectives of former members of the media who now study and view it from the outside. Cronn-Mills will provide a broad, outsider’s view of media, politics, democracy and culture.
