UMKC men’s basketball senior guard LaVell Boyd (Chicago, Ill.) earned second-team All-District 6 honors from the National Association of Basketball Coaches, it was announced Wednesday.
“It is awesome to see all of the hard work that LaVell has put in pay off,” head coach Kareem Richardson said. “He is one of the hardest workers that I have ever coached. LaVell is one of the reasons we were able to play and win in the postseason for the first time in school history. We are extremely proud of his commitment to our UMKC program.”
Boyd was a first-team All-Western Athletic Conference selection and led UMKC in scoring (17.8), assists (3.9), steals (1.1) and minutes (31.0) per game. He also led the team in made free throws (158) and 3-pointers (87) and was second on the squad in free throw percentage (83.2). He shot 41 percent (189-for-461) from the floor and 40 percent (87-for-216) from 3-point range.
During the 2016-17 season, Boyd scored in double figures 32 times and finished with 20-plus points in 13 games. He set a new single-season program record with 136 assists. He dished out at least four assists in 20 games and pulled down 4-plus rebounds 24 times.
Among his WAC peers, Boyd finished second in the conference in free throw percentage, third in assists, fourth in scoring and 3-pointers, fifth in 3-point field goal percentage and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5) and seventh in minutes.
In the UMKC record book, Boyd became the first junior college transfer to join the program’s 1,000-Point Club. He finished his Roos career 11th in program history in points (1,061), fifth in free throw percentage (82.5) and 3-point field goal percentage (41.1), seventh in scoring average (16.1) and 3-pointers (168), tied for eighth in 20-plus point games (20) and ninth in double figures scoring performances (56).
Boyd led UMKC to its first postseason appearance and victory in the program’s 30-year Division I history as the Roos defeated Green Bay on March 15 to advance to the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational Presented by FIVE FOUR.
