New Mexico State University’s Doña Ana County Cooperative Extension Service in conjunction with the NMSU-Fred Hutchinson Cancer Outreach Program is hosting a series of workshops dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of cancer survivors.

The Cancer Thriving and Surviving/Chronic Disease Self-Management Program will be a six-week workshop focusing on building skills, sharing experiences and providing mutual support. Topics include pain management, nutrition, exercise, medication use, emotions and communicating with doctors. 

“Unfortunately, cancer education and services in the border region are relatively scarce. The Cancer Thriving and Surviving workshop will be offered for the first time in Las Cruces by the NMSU/Fred Hutch Cancer Outreach Program staff,” said Rebecca Palacios of NMSU’s Public Health Sciences department.

Weekly sessions will begin Monday, May 22, from 1-3:30 p.m. with the following sessions taking place each Monday through June 26. Sessions will be held at the Southern Area Health Education Center located at 4003 Geothermal Drive. Family, friends and caregivers are also welcome to attend.

“Given the rapid growth of the border region observed in recent decades, we can expect an increased number of cancer survivors and a greater need for survivorship education and services,” said Palacios, “It is a first step toward addressing education needs of cancer survivors in this underserved region.”

The CTS/CDSMP is supported by the New Mexico Department of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program and is being offered in partnership with New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service.
