The Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Music Performance Series announces its fall schedule of visiting artist concert events. In addition to the professional artist series, the Department of Music will offer 14 student ensemble concerts and three student recitals over the course of the fall semester.

The Performance Series offers contemporary and ethnically diverse music featuring nationally and internationally recognized artists. The series also offers instruction through master classes, clinics and workshops benefitting the university community, Mankato area residents and K-12 students.

Fall semester Performance Series concerts and artist highlights include:

Thursday, Sept. 7: Maud Hixson is a singer of classic jazz and popular songs of the 30s, 40s, and 50s. She made her Guthrie Theater (Mpls.) debut in 2010, performed at the New York Cabaret Convention in 2011 at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall, and in 2012 appeared in concert with composer and pianist Richard Rodney Bennett as part of the Midtown Jazz Series in New York.

Monday, Sept. 11: Ray Bonneville is an Austin Texas singer-songwriter and Red House recording artist whose acclaimed performance groove is the product of a unique, electric guitar style, unrivaled harmonica tone, smoky vocals and unwavering foot percussion. Bonneville has earned many accolades including awards from the International Folk Alliance, the International Blues Foundation, and the Canadian Juno music award.

Sunday, Sept. 19: Dumpy Jug Bumpers bring back the sounds of country blues, ragtime, and jug band music from the era of 78 RPM records. Bassist Liz Draper performs and tours nationally with the Grammy Award winning Okee Dokee Brothers when she isn’t performing with DJB.

Tuesday, Sept. 19: Dusty Heart merges rich vocal harmonies with intimate layers of guitar, fiddle and banjo. Barbara Jean and Molly Dean are two songwriters recognized in their own right for their poetic lyrics and distinct vocal styles. Together they craft a sound that bridges the diverse musical worlds of roots, indie, and folk.

Monday, Oct. 16: Heartland Marimba Ensemble is an ensemble of four dynamic solo performers. The ensemble tours the nation regularly and is featured as artist-in-residence annually each summer at the Heartland Marimba Festival Academy at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Thursday, Oct. 19: Jack Klatt has paid his dues traveling America, Europe and Canada with his guitar at his side. Klatt carries the torch of his inspiration proudly, following in the tradition of Utah Phillips, Blind Willie MacTell, and Townes Van Zandt.

Saturday, Oct. 28: Davina and the Vagabonds exploded onto the Minnesota music scene in 2005. The Vagabonds have grown from a down-and-dirty blues band into one of the most exciting acoustic ensembles on the international stage. In recent years, they have performed in 45 states, two Canadian provinces and 12 European countries. The Vagabonds have appeared at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Monterey Jazz Festival, the North Sea Jazz Festival, as well as festival appearances in Canada, Romania, Switzerland, Finland, and France.

Thursday, Nov. 2: Nooky Jones is a fan favorite on the University campus. The six-piece group from Minneapolis blends soul, jazz, R&B, and funk to create a warm, deeply grooving sound. The band is composed of some of the most forward thinking players in Minneapolis performing some of Minnesota’s freshest music featuring sophisticated, seductive and smooth neo-soul music.

Saturday, Nov. 4: Phil Markowitz has been a talented pianist for decades. After graduating from the Eastman School of Music, Markowitz moved to New York City where he worked with the Chet Baker Quartet which resulted in four European tours and several recordings. In 1987 Markowitz became a permanent member of the Bob Mintzer Big Band, and in 1990 he began an association with Dave Liebman. Markowitz has also recorded and/or worked with Phil Woods, Michael Brecker, Stan Getz and Lionel Hampton.

Saturday, Nov. 18: Erik Koskinen has amassed a following as a musician, songwriter, producer and engineer. With experience stemming from years of traveling north to south and coast-to-coast, Koskinen taps those adventures and encounters in his third album, "American Theatre." Jon Bream of the Minneapolis Star Tribune calls Erik Koskinen “…the state’s best pure country singer/songwriter.”

In addition to Performance Series events, the Department of Music will offer a number of student ensemble concerts, including the Concert Choir (David Dickau, conductor); University Chorale (Aaron Humble, conductor); Concert Wind Ensemble and Symphony Band (Amy Roisum Foley, conductor); Minnesota State Mankato Community Orchestra (Joseph Rodgers, conductor); the Jazz Mavericks Big Band and Contemporary Vocal and Instrumental Ensembles (Douglas Snapp, director); and the University Percussion ensemble directed by Michael Thursby.
