Alumna to deliver lectures about advocacy, relationship building

A Northwest Missouri State University alumna will share her powerful tips to be a more effective advocate for change and creating healthy and productive  relationships.

Lisa Gruenloh, who graduated from Northwest in 1992 with her bachelor’s degree in government and broadcasting, will visit the campus Monday, April 3, and speak to a variety of groups throughout the day.

She will deliver a culminating lecture, “Seeing Purple: How to Be the Change You Want to See in Advocacy, Work and Life,” at 7 p.m. in the J.W. Jones Student Union Ballroom. The lecture is free and open to the public.

“The intended takeaway from Lisa’s presentation is for a cognizance of the necessity for strong leadership in divisive times,” Student Senate President Hannah Sears said. “The Northwest community should continue to practice open mindedness and ensure tolerance and respect for all perspectives and ideological beliefs, and Lisa’s career reflects those values.”

Support for Gruenloh’s visit is a collaborative effort of Northwest’s Student Activities Council; Student Senate; the Office Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; and first lady Denise Jasinski.

“Our hope was to bring Lisa to campus because she has built a career around bipartisanship and valuing diversity in thought,” Sears said. “In a larger sense, we wanted Lisa to come and impart a unifying message to the students of her alma mater.” 

Gruenloh is the president of Purpose Journey Inc., through which she provides consulting, training and coaching services in organizational culture, leadership development, team effectiveness and stakeholder engagement. Gruenloh also is a citizen leader for No Labels, a Washington, D.C.-based organization that engages elected officials in collaborative, productive problem solving.

Her “Seeing Purple” initiative creates a supportive learning community for individuals and groups who believe in understanding, appreciating and leveraging differences in politics, government, advocacy, business or communities for a greater good.

In addition to her lecture at 7 p.m., Gruenloh will present “Staying Grounded During Change and Uncertainty” during a Brown Bag Lunch event for Northwest faculty and staff at noon on Monday. Gruenloh also will be the keynote speaker during the University’s annual Awards and Recognition Ceremony at 3:30 p.m. Monday, April 3, in the J.W. Jones Student Union Ballroom. Her keynote is titled, "Purpose: The New Leverage Point for Success from the Inside Out.”
